Thank you so much. Can I let it have hay. It likes the dry hay but not the Producers Pride calf starter and it needs roughage because it has the scours.
One of my cows passed away last week leaving behind a five week old calf. I tried every trick that I knew, but he just refused to nurse. I tried putting salt on my finger and letting him suck on it first, but no go.
We still have to work out our sexed semen success and our heifer : bull ratio — at last count we were about 56 dairy heifers, 5 beef heifers and the rest in bulls so the ratio is pretty good. The reasons might be because it suckled its mother and it is finding it hard to adjust to the teat on the bottle, rolling it around its mouth rather than sucking on it. It might not be hungry enough but you know it still needs the antibodies in the colostrum so the milk has to be fed. It might be stubborn.

Raising bottle calves is easy if you follow some basic guidelines. Colostrum is also the perfect food because it has a much higher fat content than regular milk and gives the calf energy for strength and keeping warm if the weather is cold. He will need one to two quarts, depending on his size.
